DAILY CREATIVE – My favorite creative career podcast is called Daily Creative. I’ve been listening to this podcast for 20 years, since it’s inception. It’s my repeated daily inspiration and creative motivation. I walk every morning at 6am (sometimes in the dark) with the dog (Cassie) and listen to this podcast. I listen repeatedly to the episodes and take notes as I’m walking. It sets the tone for my day; as a teacher, as a performer, as an artist, an a creator. Today’s episode was epic! It is celebrating 20 years of the podcast. So perfect for my first BLOG!! In the beginning it was called The Accidental Creative. That’s what drew me in. I’m an accidental creative. I didn’t really plan this career, I was drawn to it, with inspiration from family and mentors and then it happened! The themes of the podcast today today were:
- Starting Imperfectly Is Essential
- Protect the Fragile elements of Life
- Approach work Like a Beginner
- Solve Problems with What You Know
- Distinguish Busyness from True Work
I highly recommend you give this episode a listen (episode 87), follow the podcast and strive to be a Daily Creative. You got this!
BLOG – Be a SPOKES-person!!
Have you dreamt of a life on stage or behind the scenes? Fantastic! Honestly, making it as a performing artist takes more than just talent and practice. It’s the daily grind of honing your craft, pushing your boundaries, and becoming the best you can be.
I want to invite you to think about and make a list of your skill sets: what do you do well and also enjoy doing? (talking to people, being outdoors, inspiring people, performing, teaching, designing interactive creative technology, traveling, contributing to something larger than myself, etc.). Considering those things what can you imagine combining and turning into something unique? For example, in my younger years, I enjoyed writing rhymes. I connected this to my brass playing artist career and wrote rhymes about playing brass instruments. I turned this into ‘rapping about brass instruments and joining the band’ (which lead to 8 years of touring and performing).
What is that for you???? What do you value, what do you love to do, what are you passionate about?
Then, think of your career as a hub-and-spoke wheel, with your artistry at the center. The spokes? Those are all the ways you’ll earn a living—from the traditional gigs like teaching, performing, writing, and designing, to the entrepreneurial spirit of launching your own creative projects, or even juggling a day job to pay the bills.
The key is to start building those spokes now. Embrace the hustle, budget wisely, and know that your artistic journey is about both passion and practicalities.
